´Stupid´ errors annoy Mazzarri

Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri was pleased with his side’s 5-3 win at Torino on Saturday but also bemoaned ‘stupid’ errors.

The Naples-based club remain nine points behind Serie A leaders Juventus in second place but they were made to work hard for their triumph in Turin.

After leading 1-0 and 2-1, Napoli trailed 3-2 with just 10 minutes to play, only for Blerim Dzemaili to net his hat-trick to equalise.

And Uruguayan forward Edinson Cavani scored two late strikes to give Mazzarri’s men all three points.

The club coach was pleased with the result and said that at half-time he urged them to take more advantage of the constant chances they were creating.

“I’m very satisfied for how we interpreted the game,” Mazzarri said.

“Unfortunately we always make stupid and individual mistakes and risk to waste points on the way. It would have been a shame (if we had of lost).

“During the interval I told them it was a pity to play that good and still be 1-1. We would have already deserved to have closed the game.

“I told them to continue playing like that and try not to make mistakes. I was calm, they understood me straight away. They believed they could make it and it was normal they kept believing they could make it until the 95th minute of play, we always do that and we were fairly awarded by that. “

Dzemaili said after the match that his side can still catch Juventus on the table.

But Mazzarri wants his team to focus on what they are doing instead, and expressed pride in Napoli’s achievements this season.

“Dzemaili is not wrong when he says Juventus is close now, but I prefer if we don’t look behind or ahead,” he said.

“I prefer my guys to focus on themselves and try to avoid stupid mistakes like we made today and keep on playing like we played today, with more cynicism when we create so many chances to score.

“We need to finish those actions and avoid mistakes in defence that unfortunately cost us some precious points.

“Anyway let’s not forget that we have gained 11 points more than last season up to now, and Juventus have gained six points more than last season, our gap would be only of three points if Juventus would have done (exactly what they did) last season. We’ve been doing great things.”
