The 2014 FIFA World Cup has seen great goals, fairytale stories, moments of madness and huge wins, and Twitter has chronicled them all.
“For this World Cup, I wish good health to all the players, safety and enjoyment to all the fans, and most importantly: strength and unity for my country. Go Brazil!” – Brazil legend Pele before the tournament began with a 3-1 win for the host nation against Croatia.
“What an incredible night yest [yesterday] v spain a night Holland will never forget! We got to push on and make our time in Brazil even more special!!” – Netherlands’ 5-1 win over then-world champions Spain on day two was stunning, with striker Robin van Persie hailing it as a great moment.

“@TimCahill You little ripper… #boom What a goal !!!!!” – Australian cricketer Shane Warne – who knew all about performing on the big stage with 708 Test wickets – was amazed by countryman Tim Cahill’s incredible volley against Netherlands.
“My apologies @chiellini” – Uruguay striker and serial biter Luis Suarez belatedly apologises for sinking his teeth into Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in what was the undoubted low point of the tournament. He added a picture, that contained an explanation and a full apology, to his Tweet.
“@luis16suarez It’s all forgotten. I hope FIFA will reduce your suspension.” – Chiellini graciously responded to the Uruguay man, who was hit with a four-month ban from all football-related activity and given a nine-match suspension from competitive international appearances.
“We’re going with our head high. Very proud of what the guys did. Thanks to all the fans that are always with us.” – Mexico coach Miguel Herrera – who became a social media sensation during the tournament – tweets his thanks after Mexico exited the tournament in the round of 16 against Netherlands.
“Messi has played 3 games. He’s scored 4 goals, 3 of them from outside the box, and been voted Man of the Match in all 3 games.” – Back to the football, England legend Gary Lineker hails Lionel Messi’s group-stage performances for Argentina.
“@jamesdrodriguez Congrats on a great World Cup! U gave it your all. Keep your head high. U made your country of Colombia proud! #JamesGang” – Four-time NBA MVP LeBron James sends Colombia star James Rodriguez – the tournament’s top scorer with six – his best wishes after their quarter-final elimination to Brazil.
“We made it! This is history! VAMOS COSTA RICA.” – Not content with beating Uruguay and Italy in the group stages, Costa Rica also bettered Greece on penalties to reach the tournament’s last eight. And the nation’s president, Luis Guillermo Solis, could not contain his excitement.
“So rough, congrats to Argentina! Thanks for all the moments #switzerland.” – Argentina needed a 118th-minute goal to edge Switzerland in their last-16 clash. Swiss tennis star Roger Federer praised the efforts of his nation.
“Great job #USA I’m proud of you boys! You put your heart in it!!!” – The United States also bowed out on July 1, despite a brave performance against Belgium, which pop star Rihanna enjoyed.
“@NeymarJr will be back faster than we imagine. #ForcaNeymar” – Neymar’s serious back injury against Colombia was a low moment for Brazil, but the country’s president, Dilma Rousseff, was positive of a speedy recovery.
“The best German performance ever in a World Cup !! Simply fantastic !! Now get the Cup JOGI [coach Joachim Low] and TEAM!! #DFBTeam” – United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann – who played for and coached Germany – was in awe of their semi-final performance against Brazil.
“JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! TOOOOOOOR!!!!! #GER!!!!!” – The official account of the German national team says it all as a nation reacts to Mario Gotze’s winner in the final that clinched Joachim Low’s side their fourth World Cup – although the English of ‘Yes, Goal’ does lose a little in translation!
