Quite possibly one of the most evenly matched group in this year’s competition is bound to offer premium excitement throughout the campaign. Heavily reinforced Manchester United will be eager to impress after missing the 2014/2015 season, while Bundesliga high-flyers Wolfsburg aim to prove they can cope with the departure of Kevin De Bruyne. Chances are that both CSKA Moscow and PSV Eindhoven will harbour hopes to reach the next stage, with the race for the top two positions set to go to the wire.
Market: Group Betting
Tip: Manchester United to Win Group B
Odds: 10/11 @ bet365
Manchester United reached the group stage via the play-offs, but the 7-1 aggregate win over Club Brugge proved the Red Devils are very motivated to prove their worth in Europe’s top competition. Louis van Gaal has signed some very good players in Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Darmian, Depay and Martial, and even if the back line remains far from impressive, United should have enough quality as well as experience to secure the first place in Group B and remain on course for a successful European campaign.
Market: Group Qualification
Tip: Wolfsburg to Qualify from Group B
Odds: 8/15 @ bet365
Last two seasons have shown that Wolfsburg are on the road to return to old glory days, with the Wolves pushing mighty Bayern all the way in Bundesliga while also impressing in Europa League until the surprise exit to Napoli. The German giants may have been forced to cash in on De Bruyne, but in turn recruited Ascues, Dante and Draxler, among others, and the strong start to the season is enough to suggest they will qualify for the Champions League knockout stages alongside Man Utd, even if CSKA Moscow and PSV Eindhoven are expected to put up a real fight in the process.
PSV Eindhoven v Manchester United
Market: Both Teams to Score
Odds: 8/11 @ bet365
The title-winning PSV Eindhoven side stayed without Memphis Depay, who will now be on the other side of the pitch, but in came Maxime Lestienne, who now forms a very dangerous attacking trident with Netherlands internationals Luuk de Jong and Luciano Narsingh. And while Manchester United arrive at Phillips Stadium as favourites to claim maximum points, their shaky back line cannot be trusted to keep a clean sheet in the Netherlands, so backing both teams to score in the opening Group B match seems like a very good option.
Wolfsburg v CSKA Moscow
Market: Match Result
Tip: Home win
Odds: 8/11 @ bet365
Wolfsburg began this season in style, picking off from where they left off last term, and it looks as through they won’t have too many problems compensating for the departure of Kevin De Bruyne, especially with Julian Draxler arriving at Volkswagen Arena. The back line should be even stronger than last term with Dante returning to the club, and while in-form CSKA Moscow will be a formidable opposition, the second-best side in German Bundesliga should be trusted to start the Champions League campaign with a win.
