Tim Cahill scored a brilliant long-range goal on his A-League debut as Melbourne City thrashed local rivals Melbourne Victory 4-1 in front of a crowd of over 43,000.
Australia legend Cahill, 36, set the visitors on their way by finding the top corner from 40 yards in the first half, before prolific striker Bruno Fornaroli quickly followed that up with a header.
Goals from Luke Brattan and Marco Rojas early in the second period then ended the game as a contest as Victory’s defence capitulated, meaning Fernando Brandan’s strike was scant consolation.
City now have a maximum six points from their first two matches this season, while Victory only have one.

In Saturday’s other game, Sydney FC thrashed Central Coast Mariners 4-0, with Filip Holosko netting a double – one of which came from the penalty spot – to stay top at this early stage.
Bobo and substitute Alex Brosque were the hosts’ other scorers as they cruised to victory, continuing a fine start to the season after they won by the same scoreline against Western Sydney Wanderers on matchday one.
