Football Federation Australia has confirmed that the new Western Sydney A-League club will be known as Western Sydney Wanderers, with experienced full back Tarek Elrich one of the team’s first three signings.

The rumours that the new club would opt for the ‘Wanderers’ brand had been strong for a few weeks and the name was confirmed as the club was launched on Monday, just over three months before their first game against Central Coast Mariners.

It was also confirmed that Parramatta Stadium would be the new team’s home ground and they will wear red and black hoops as their home strip, with white shorts.

Elrich, Aaran Mooy and Kwabena Appiah-Kubi, are the first three signings for coach Tony Popovic with more expected to be announced in the coming days.

“The arrival of the Wanderers in the Hyundai A-League is a truly monumental event,” club executive chairman Lyall Gorman said.

“Football’s heartland will have its own team in the national competition.

“The sons and daughters of western Sydney’s rich football heritage will get to represent their region on the national stage and beyond across Asia and the world.

“Even more important is that this club will be different – it will be powered by the proud people of the west.”
