Aberdeen have released midfielder Stephen Hughes from his contract 12 months early.

The 29-year-old made 27 appearances for the club in the campaign just gone after joining last January.

However, new Pittodrie boss Derek McInnes has now added Hughes’ name to the list of departures from the SPL side.

Hughes lists Rangers, Norwich and Leicester among his former clubs and joins seven other Aberdeen players to leave the club since McInnes took over.

A Pittodrie spokesperson said: “The club can confirm that Stephen Hughes has been released from his contract with the Dons and is free to sign for another club.

“Everyone at Aberdeen wishes Stephen all the very best in his future career.”
