Adelaide United have signed Argentine forward Jeronimo Neumann to a permanent deal until the end of the 2014-15 A-League season.

The 26-year-old forward arrived at the Reds in August on an initial loan deal from Paraguayan club Sol de America, and scored his first goal in the second leg of the AFC Champions League semi-final with Bunyodkor.

He has found the back of the net five times in 10 matches in all competitions for Adelaide, prompting the offer of a two-year extension to his existing one-season deal.

“It’s terrific to see players of the quality of Jeronimo come into the A-League in the first instance and even better when they stick around for longer terms, so to have ‘Jero’ here for the next two seasons speaks volumes for the club and what we are trying to build here,” Reds football director Michael Petrillo said via club statement on Thursday.

“Negotiations went very smoothly and we have only been awaiting his release from his previous club Sol de America in Paraguay, which arrived last night.”

Neumann, who began his career at powerhouse River Plate in his homeland and also spent time at Estudiantes and English club Barnsley, was one of two Argentines signed by United for the 2012-13 campaign.

While he was subject to accusations of diving after the match with the Wellington Phoenix in October, Neumann and his countryman Marcelo Carrusca have played a major part in Adelaide’s ascension to second on the A-League table.

“From the first day here everyone has been so good to me, the owners, management, the staff, the coaches and the players have accepted me so well, but what has been amazing is the way the fans have made me feel so welcome and a part of the club so quickly,” he said.

“Everything has been very good so far – it’s a great club and a great city and that’s why I decided to stay for a longer time here.

“I now look forward to focus on my football and do my best for the team.”
