AFC Cup wrap: Barisic fires East Bengal past Tampines

Australian striker Andrew Barisic scored twice as East Bengal defeated Tampines Rovers 4-2 to move top of the AFC Cup’s Group H.

Barisic scored twice in the second half as East Bengal claimed their second victory of the 2013 AFC Cup, rising above Vietnam’s Xuan Thanh Sai Gon to the top of Group H on goal difference.

East Bengal took the lead in unusual fashion on Wednesday when Tampines captain Anaz bin Abdul Hadee thumped the ball into his own net in the 19th minute.

An East Bengal corner was flicked on at the near post and then knocked towards Abdul Hadee, who failed to control the ball and then desperately tried to clear it with his right foot, only to send it into the roof of the net.

Tampines were level at half-time thanks to Sead Hadzibulic’s strike but Barisic put the visitors back in front at Jalan Besar Stadium just after the hour mark.

Chidi Edah extended the Indians’ lead two minutes later and although Tampines hit back immediately through Khairul Amri, East Bengal wrapped up the match with three minutes remaining thanks to Barisic’s second goal.

Xuan Thanh Sai Gon joined East Bengal on seven points from three matches with a 2-1 triumph over Selangor of Malysia, while Al Ansar won 2-0 away to Al Ahli Ta’izz.

In Indonesia, Sun Hei of Hong Kong came from two goals down with 20 minutes remaining to draw 3-3 with Persibo.

Argentine striker Julio Alcorse put Persibo 3-1 ahead at home in the 68th minute but two minutes later Choi Kwok Wai scored to give Sun Hei a lifeline.

In a dramatic finale, Brazilian defensive midfielder Roberto struck in the 93rd minute to complete Sun Hei’s comeback.

In other AFC Cup results, Al Qadsia thumped Ravshan 3-0, Yangon United defeated New Radiant 2-0, Erbil won 1-0 over Fanja and Al Ramtha overcame Shorta 1-0.
