Toby Alderweireld believes his Ajax and Belgium team-mate Jan Vertonghen would be a huge success if he moved to Tottenham.
Vertonghen, the Amsterdam club’s captain, has impressed this season despite a poor campaign in the Eredivisie for the reigning Dutch champions.
AC Milan and Arsenal have also been linked to the Belgian but Alderweireld believes he would be better suited in the white half of north London.
“I think he’s ready for a next step in his career. He’s proving that with his constant level during matches”, he told Voetbal International.
“Tottenham Hotspur would be a beautiful club for him. They’re playing in the top of a wonderful competition. He would also have a big chance to become a player for the first 11.”
“For Jan the money is not important, he’s got more important considerations. Of course, personally I hope he stays at Ajax. He’s extremely important for our team.”
Vertonghen’s contract expires in 2013 and Ajax may be keen to cash in on their skipper in the summer when he will have just a year left on his deal.
