Al Wasl have suspended goalkeeper Majed Nasser for the entire 2012/13 season after his red card in Sunday’s defeat to Al Muharraq.
The UAE goalkeeper was sent off after 10 minutes in the Gulf Clubs Championship final when he headbutted an opponent, leading Diego Maradona’s side to publicly slam his action.
The club described the ‘keeper’s behaviour as ‘disgraceful’ and ‘detrimental, not just to the reputation of Al Wasl, but the country as a whole’.
Al Wasl’s board of birectors had met earlier in the week, requesting a year-long ban from the UAE’s Pro-League committee for the player but the club have now made the suspension official themselves.
Nasser will not receive any remuneration during the 2012/13 season, while he will also miss out on any financial bonuses which may come from their run in the Gulf Clubs Championship.
The goalkeeper was previously involved in controversy earlier this year, when he was given a 17-game ban for slapping Al Ahli boss Quique Sanchez Flores.
