West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has hit out a referee Anthony Taylor following his side’s controversial 2-1 loss to Everton.
Leon Osman saw his early header allegedly disallowed for a rogue elbow to a Hammers player – which replays failed to clear up – before Carlton Cole went up the other end minutes later to put his side ahead.
The striker was then dismissed midway through the second half after a perceived high foot on Leighton Baines, with Everton scoring the eventual winner just six minutes later – and Allardyce has called for an overhaul of the Premier League officiating system after questioning the ability of match officials.
“The channels and the system that we have needs replacing and it needs pursuing quite vigorously.” he told reporters. “The referee has a very difficult job but if he’s not getting the right coaching, we’ve got a very big problem.
“I’ll be asking the referees’ bosses what the way forward is and I’ll have to be satisfied that I get the discussion and issues debated and try to make sure that the referees are better.
“We had TVs put in the dugouts in 2005 and they were ripped out by the Premier League in 2006 – shows you how backwards we are, doesn’t it?”
Everton also had a man sent off, with Darron Gibson receiving his marching orders for a similar offence to Cole’s, and boss David Moyes has revealed that he will be appealing to get Gibson’s red card overturned – while admitting the West Ham striker’s red card was also unjust.
“I thought neither were sending offs but after the first one, he feels he has to give it. It was just two players honestly going for the ball. You can see by Leighton Baines’ reaction, he just dusts himself down and gets on with it,” Moyes said.
“I will appeal [Gibson’s dismissal]. I’ll have a word with Sam beforehand to see what he thinks about it, but I’m really not sure whether you could call it frivolous.
“I was really annoyed at the [disallowed] goal. I thought it looked a good goal. Osman’s won a header and West Ham are better than anybody at defending those areas in their box, but the decision has been given by a linesman 60 yards away.”
