Allegri expects more of the same

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri wants his team to maintain their strong finish to the season after a 4-0 win over Pescara on Wednesday.

Mario Balotelli made it 11 goals from as many games with two strikes against the already-relegated club, as Sulley Muntari and Mathieu Flamini grabbed the other two.

Milan are four points clear of Fiorentina in fourth with two games to go and a win at home to Roma on Sunday would secure a route into the UEFA Champions League qualifying playoffs next season.

“There are still games to go and so we still have to win a match, a victory that we hope to get on Sunday against Roma and that would mathematically guarantee us third place in the league, otherwise we will have to try to do it in Siena,” he told reporters after the game.

“We have to stay focused because anything can happen in football and winning games is never easy.”

Allegri also praised his players for their focus in the mid-week match and stressed the importance of picking up three points with the campaign so close to completion.

“Today (Wednesday) the lads were great because they had the right approach to the game,” he added.

“It was important to win, not concede a goal and so I believe it was another fundamental step towards this third place.”

Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi’s appeal against tax fraud charges was rejected by the court system on Wednesday and Allegri dedicated the win to the former Italy prime minister, who will have one more opportunity to appeal and is unlikely to face jail time due to the case’s expiration limit being reached in the foreseeable future.

“I am always very close to the president and I think that at the moment he is also very close to the whole team,” he said.

“I think the results of recent months are very much his doing because he put together a team that had to start from scratch but with an important group of players and I think the lads will want to dedicate this fine victory to the president.”
