Silvio Berlusconi says AC Milan would be happy to pay Massimiliano Allegri more if that meant keeping him at the club.
The former Italy president has distanced himself from recent comments suggesting Allegri did not ‘understand anything’ and said a new and improved deal could be on the horizon for the coach.
“We are not a poor company,” Berlusconi told La Gazzetta dello Sport when asked how he would react to a rival club attempting to lure Allegri away.
“In the face of offers from other clubs for Max, we could respond with terms that would make Mr Allegri richer.
“The only danger, of course, is that I’d stop with the hospitals and come and see the coach instead,” Berlusconi joked in reference to an eye complaint that forced him to miss a political rally this week.
Speaking ahead of AC Milan’s derby clash with Inter, the president spoke about the close ties he has built with Allegri.
“The good relations between me and Allegri are constant – there is cordiality and mutual respect,” Berlusconi said.
“On many things we agree. I have always accepted his advice and he has always accepted my explanation.
“After a difficult start we have recovered form and balance.
“There is harmony in the dressing room where no bad eggs can create a negative energy.”
AC Milan are third in Serie A on 44 points after 25 games, a spot ahead of rivals Inter who sit in fifth.
