Aloisi: Heart deserved more

Melbourne Heart coach John Aloisi says his team should have won after conceding late to lose 2-1 to Melbourne Victory on Saturday.

Heart found themselves trailing 1-0 to a Marco Rojas goal despite dominating possession in the derby at AAMI Park.

They equalised through Fred’s header with eight minutes to go and pushed on in search of a second goal, only to be caught on the break by Archie Thompson, who claimed a dramatic winner in the last minute of injury time.

“We’re not winning the games we should win,” Aloisi said.

“That’s been the story of our season so far. Everyone’s been going on about other sides, how good they are. But most sides that we’ve played against, we’ve actually done well against. Tonight, I’ve got no doubt, and I might be a little bit biased … but we should have won that game.

“We actually felt that we could go on and win the game.

“When we did have the ball we were causing problems and creating some good openings.

“They had a lot of the ball but without really hurting us too much. But I did think we were at least going to get a point and hopefully three because we were pushing for it.

Confusion reigned in the final seconds of the match, with spectators and players alike unsure if Thompson’s chipped effort went over the line before it was hooked clear by Aziz Behich.

Television replays appeared to validate the referee’s decision to award a goal.

“I don’t know if it crossed the line, I didn’t see it on the reply,” Aloisi said when quizzed on the contentious subject.

“And Aziz, he left quite quickly after the game, after his recovery, I didn’t see him.”

Yellow cards for centre-backs Simon Colosimo and Patrick Gerhardt mean Heart will be without their regular defensive duo when they go away to Wellington Phoenix next Thursday.

“I’m trying to sort out my team for the Wellington game because we’ve got a few players suspended,” Aloisi said.

“It’s tough, but we’re got boys that we believe can do a job. David Vrankovic will get another opportunity, Stevie Gray, that hasn’t played yet for us, they’ll come straight in and they’ll be looking forward to playing.

“We just have to deal with the situation. Everyone talks about depth and we’ve had to use all our players this year. Most of the time when they’ve come in they’ve done well.”
