American Samoa made history by beating Tonga 2-1 in their World Cup 2014 qualifying match on Wednesday for their first ever international win.
Ramin Ott opened the scoring in the first half, before Shalom Luani made the result safe after the interval.
American Samoa dominated for long spells at the JS Blatter Field in Apia, but were given a late scare when Tonga pulled one back through Unaloto Feao with just a few minutes remaining.
American Samoa held on to record their first win, having lost all 30 of their previous international matches.
American Samoa defender Johnny Saelua was named the player of the match following the historic win and is believed to be the first transgender player to feature in an official international game.
Saelua was over the moon after the big victory and said she feels right at home among the rest of the squad.
“The team accepts me and we have that mutual respect, which is great. It’s all part of the culture,” Saelua said.
Former USA under-20 coach Thomas Rongen, who was the architect of the win, said: “I’ve really got a female starting at centre-back, can you imagine that in England or Spain?”
