Ancelotti: Casillas will play

Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed Iker Casillas will start for Real Madrid against Levante after being dropped from the Spain national team.

Casillas was at fault for Slovakia’s first goal as Spain suffered a shock 2-1 Euro 2016 qualifying loss last Thursday and was subsequently left out for Sunday’s 4-0 win over Luxembourg, with Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea taking his place.

It was the latest in a growing list of mistakes from Casillas, who also made a number of errors in Spain’s World Cup defeats to Netherlands and Chile.

As Real prepare to visit Levante on Saturday, Ancelotti has dismissed any talk of replacing him with Keylor Navas, insisting that the national team has no bearing on his selection.

“Iker Casillas will play tomorrow,” he said in a press conference on Friday. “Keylor Navas arrived back yesterday evening.

“The Spanish national team is not Real Madrid and we have no desire to transition from one keeper to another. De Gea does not play here.”

Ancelotti also revealed that Sami Khedira could feature at some stage after a hamstring problem, but that Jese Rodriguez was still a way off following his serious knee injury.

“The player [Khedira] has returned and made a complete recovery from the problem he had with his hamstring,” the Italian said.

“He is ready to play, but he is still not fully fit. He has gotten over his injury and can give us more strength in the centre of the park.

“He [Jese] is still working on his own. We are not hurrying him and I still can’t give a precise date for when he’ll return to the squad. He is in good form and will be back with us very soon.”
