Ancelotti keen on Ronaldo renewal

SoccerNews in La Liga 20 Jul 2013

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti expects Cristiano Ronaldo to extend his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The prolific Portuguese forward has recently been linked with a move away from the Spanish club, with his public declarations of unhappiness last season leading to suggestions that former club Manchester United could make a bid.

However, Ancelotti, who was appointed as Jose Mourinho’s successor at Real earlier this month, is looking forward to working with the 28-year-old, who has scored 201 goals in 199 outings for the club.

“Everyone knows that he is a superstar and a great player,” he said.

“The most important thing for the club is that a player of his quality shows the utmost professionalism. That is good, especially for the young players who can see a world-class player working with that attitude.

“I am not responsible for the renewal of his contract, but it won’t be a problem.”

The Italian also discussed the futures of wantaway duo Gonzalo Higuain and Fabio Coentrao, insisting he would be happy to see both players stay put.

“I have spoken to the player, but it was a private conversation. He is currently a Real Madrid player and I am happy to have him here,” he said of Higuain, who announced his desire to leave upon the conclusion of the 2012-13 campaign.

And on Coentrao, who has struggled for regular playing time since his 2011 arrival from Benfica, the former Milan boss said: “I spoke to him and I can say the same as in the case of Higuain. He is currently a Real Madrid player and I am happy to have him here.

“He is a quality left-back; there are many games this season and I think he is a useful player for the squad.”
