Andre Villas-Boas set to be named as new Tottenham boss

According to Sky Sports reports Portuguese boss Andre Villas-Boas will become the new boss of Tottenham in the next few days.

The sports news outlet believes that the former-Chelsea boss flew into England on Monday to finalise the details of a three-year deal.

Disaster

Andre Villas-Boas reign at Premier League Chelsea was nothing short of a disaster.

He was fired after less than a year at the club, after the senior players turned against him. The rookie boss tried to stamp his authority on the squad but waited into he was a few months into the job.

Had he tried to put his foot down earlier on in his reign he may have been more successful at Chelsea. Villas-Boas was trying to clear out the older players and create a new team at Stamford Bridge. Unfortunately, as they showed under Roberto Di Matteo the older players still had a lot to offer the Blues.

AVB left Chelsea with hardly anybody having a good thing to say about him. Chelsea appointed Roberto Di Matteo and the rest is history.

Opportunity

The Spurs job is his opportunity to prove to all his critics that he is the talented head coach that lots of people thought he was before he took over at Chelsea. He had a promising start to his coaching career in Portugal and was rated as one of the best young up-and coming bosses in European football.

The Chelsea job came at the wrong time for AVB. At just 34 years of age, less than three years into his managerial career Chelsea was no place for him. The job was just far too big for the Portuguese coaching prodigy.

Ideal

Tottenham could be the ideal place for AVB to prove that he does have exceptional coaching skills and he hasn’t just been lucky in his successes so far. Tottenham have a relatively young up and coming team. They don’t have players with the same size egos as at Chelsea.

The players may be more receptive to his ideals and plans. At Chelsea he would have been thinking of breaking up virtual the whole team and rebuilding but at Tottenham he won’t have to do that. He may have to replace some players and bring in some of his own players.

However he won’t be expected to overhaul the whole Tottenham squad. One of his big problems could be the fact that midfield maestro Luka Modric wants a move away from White Hart Lane. The Croatian is again being linked with a move to Chelsea and now also Manchester United.

One of Villas-Boas’ first tasks as Tottenham manager may have to be to persuade one of their most talented players that his future lies at White Hart Lane.

Split

There seems to be a split amongst Spurs fans about the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas as their new boss. Some Spurs fans are optimistic because they believe they have appointed a forward-thinking young up-and-coming boss.

However some fans are still not sure because of his poor stint at Chelsea. I can understand their reservations about AVB. He did fail at Chelsea but Spurs and Chelsea are very different clubs. Tottenham could be where he proves himself.

Chance

In football, just like in life I believe that everybody deserves a second chance. Andre Villas-Boas didn’t become a poor manager overnight. I’m sure he has taken valuable experience from his time with Chelsea and it will make him a better manager.

I was a fan of Andre Villas-Boas before he arrived at Chelsea, as I thought he had a touch of long-term mentor Jose Mourinho in him. He had the swagger, without the same level of arrogance and hype. I hope he can kick-start his career  at Tottenham, because I really do think he has the potential to be a top class boss.

Is Andre Villas-Boas the right man for Tottenham?
