Anichebe targeting increased goal haul

Everton striker Victor Anichebe has underlined his desire to improve on last season’s goal haul in 2013-14.

The Nigerian forward scored eight goals in all competitions last season, as Everton reached the FA Cup quarter-finals and finished sixth in the Premier League.

But he is keen to do better next term, having overcome a spate of injuries to feature regularly under David Moyes toward the latter half of the campaign.

“It’s going to be interesting, the way I finished last season needs to be the minimum this year. I need to build on the good latter stage of the season that I had,” he told the club’s official website.

“I need to try to play as many games as possible, I need to try to get more goals this year and just stay fit, stay confident like I was last year and hopefully if I can do that it will be a good season.

“I don’t place any goals, I don’t place any targets, I just try to stay as fit as possible, try to stay as confident and everything should work out.

“I was injured towards the start of last season, but towards the end of the season I didn’t really miss a game, I didn’t really miss any training sessions which was pleasing to me.

“For now, I don’t really want to talk about that kind of stuff, I want to forget about it, not talk about injuries anymore. I just want to concentrate on trying to play and, hopefully, if I can do that then everything will work out.”

The 25-year-old is also looking forward to Everton’s upcoming pre-season tour, and expects some testing matches as Roberto Martinez’s stint as manager gets under way.

“We’ve got some good games, we seem to always go away to Austria,” he said. “It’s good to get away sometimes. You go away and you concentrate on what you have to do.

“It will be nice to go back to America – we’ve got hard games over there. Playing against really good teams we can test ourselves and we can come into the season trying to be as high as possible.

“It will be good for everyone to test themselves against those kind of teams.”
