All Boys have stunned Newell’s Old Boys 2-1 after a poor defensive performance from the leaders of the Argentine Primera Division.

Jonathan Ferrari and Maximiliano Coronel scored the goals for All Boys as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the hour mark and although Newell’s hit back with 12 minutes remaining, the leaders were unable to prevent their second defeat in five league matches.

Despite the loss, Newell’s continue to lead Argentina’s top flight as the other members of the top four failed to win over the weekend.

Newell’s head coach Gerardo Martino would have been disappointed with his side’s defensive work at All Boys’ Estadio Islas Malvinas on Monday, as both of the hosts’ goals came after the visitors let crosses bounce in their penalty area.

All Boys took the lead in the 36th minute when visiting goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman came off his line and completely misjudged a cross, which was allowed to bounce by Newell’s defenders and Ferrari put the ball in the net with an impressive bicycle kick.

It was 2-0 in the 60th minute when Newell’s again failed to deal with a cross from the left wing and the ball bounced to Coronel at the back post, who looped his header back across Guzman and into the net.

The visitors almost nicked a goal back in the 76th minute when substitute Victor Figueroa curled a free-kick just wide of the post, before Milton Casco gave Newell’s some hope with his goal in the 78th minute.

All Boys’ goalkeeper Nicolas Cambiasso could only parry Maxi Rodriguez’s shot and Casco rifled home the rebound but despite the goal, the home side held on, registering their first victory in four matches to rise to 13th on the Primera Division table.

Lanus, River Plate and San Lorenzo all failed to gain serious ground on Newell’s, wasting the opportunity offered by the leaders’ defeat.

On Sunday, Lanus, who sit second, were held to a scoreless draw at home by Belgrano, while River Plate were stunned 2-0 by bottom club Argentinos Juniors.

Atletico Rafaela drew 0-0 with San Lorenzo on Saturday, while Godoy Cruz defeated Arsenal 3-0 and Independiente played out a scoreless stalemate with Estudiantes.

In other Primera Division results, Quilmes won 1-0 over Racing Club, Boca Juniors drew 1-1 with Velez Sarsfield, San Martin San Juan overcame Tigre 3-1 and Union Santa Fe defeated Colon 1-0.
