Arsenal stars will get lukewarm showers – Sutton boss

Sutton United manager Paul Doswell has told Arsenal to expect lukewarm showers as part of a “nice Sutton welcome” ahead of Monday’s FA Cup fifth-round tie.

The non-league club are preparing to entertain an Arsenal side that suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday and Doswell has warned Arsene Wenger’s side not to expect state-of-the-art facilities at Gander Green Lane

Under-pressure Arsenal boss Wenger is in dire need of a positive result after receiving a barrage of criticism for his side’s display in Munich, but Doswell said his club simply could not afford to provide the standard of facilities the Gunners are accustomed to off the pitch.

Doswell said: “We’re going to give them a nice Sutton welcome because that’s what this club is about.

“We thought about putting new shower heads in, for about two seconds. Then we thought ‘no, we haven’t done that for any of the other teams that have come down’.

“It’s only because we can’t afford it.

“The boiler is absolutely shot to pieces. At best they’ll get lukewarm showers.”

Doswell said he rated his side’s chances of following up their giant-killing of Leeds United in the previous round as zero, but hopes that Arsenal help to secure the future of Sutton by donating the TV revenue from the game.

He said: “If you see [Mesut] Ozil and [Alexis] Sanchez on the team sheet then our chance doesn’t go beyond nought. If they put another team out, it comes up to the one or two per cent [mark].

“The best result for our players would be a 0-0 draw. If we were to get a draw and get back to the Emirates Stadium it would be one of the best results in the cup’s history. Half of our team support Arsenal, so to go to the Emirates and have a great day out would be their preferred result.

“The cup run won’t go into buying players. We need four new dressing rooms for the younger players. I don’t know if you’ll be able to see on Monday night because the floodlights are absolutely shocking.

“There was talk of them giving us the TV money. It would change every aspect of this football club for years to come. It’s life-changing for the club.”
