Arsene Wenger’s attempts to strengthen his midfield have so far proved fruitless, but now the Arsenal manager is ready to switch targets.
After having been credited with an unlikely move for Liverpool’s Xabi Alonso and a hopeful attempt at hijacking Gareth Barry from the clutches of Rafa Benitez, Wenger has now set his sights on Real Madrid’s Ruben de la Red.
The Spanish midfielder has spent the past season at Getafe where he impressed greatly, but he is unlikely to break into a Real Madrid first team which contains the likes of Diarra, Guti and van der Vaart in the same midfield position.
Instead, de la Red could chose to further his career elsewhere: “I am not closing the door to any team. I like the Premier League and the way they play their football,” said the Spanish midfielder, according to The Telegraph.
According to the same report, Arsenal could use the money from the sale of Alexander Hleb to finance a £9.5 million deal for de la Red.
