Lema Mabidi rifled in a 30-yard strike to salvage a 2-2 draw for AS Vita against ES Setif in the CAF Champions League final first leg.

Having fallen behind to a Firmin Ndombe Mubele own goal in the 17th minute, the home side pulled level in first-half stoppage time in Kinshasa when Mabidi found the net with a penalty.

Akram Djahnit appeared to have won it for Algerian outfit ES Setif in the 58th minute, but Mabidi equalised once again 13 minutes from time with a goal befitting of the occasion.

Despite rescuing a draw, AS Vita will not be happy with allowing their visitors to take two away goals into next Saturday’s second leg.

The home fans were stunned into silence in the 17th minute when Mubele inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net from a corner.

However, the visitors’ lead was cancelled out on the stroke of half-time after Abdelghani Demmou had been harshly penalised for handball in the penalty area.

Mabidi made no mistake as he sent the ball to the right of goalkeeper Abdelwahab Khedairia from the spot.

ES Setif re-claimed the lead when Djahnit capped a neat passing move by taking the ball around AS Vita keeper Nelson Lukong and prodding home from close range.

The Algerian side had cause for concern soon after when Abdelmalek Ziaya was caught by a high boot from team-mate Farid Mellouli, but worse was to come thanks to a moment of inspiration from Mabidi.

Having picked up the ball some 30 yards away from goal, the 21-year-old knocked the ball to his right before drilling a thunderbolt into the top right-hand corner of the net and giving his side a fighting chance of lifting the trophy for the first time in 41 years.
