Atletico Madrid coach Javier Aguirre received the firm backing of club president Enrique Cerezo on Thursday after fans called for his resignation following their midweek defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Cup.
Atletico supporters called for his head after Tuesday’s 3-1 defeat to Barcelona in the last 16, first leg, when the Mexican coach decided not to field ill Argentinian striker Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi got a hat-trick.
Cerezo said: “It’s unfair that they demand the head of Aguirre although we are still in three competitions. We are in the Champions League last 16, are three points from second spot in La Liga, and we are still in the Spanish Cup.”
