Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are keeping close tabs on Sporting CP midfielder Joao Mario, A Bola has learned.
Los Colchoners had their scouts present in Saturday’s clash against Estoril, making another check on their long-term target.
Atletico Madrid had offered €15 million for the 23-year-old last summer. but their proposal was swiftly rejected.
Joao Mario has since signed a new deal until June 2020 at Estadio Jose Alvalade, with his release clause now standing at €60 million.
Los Colchoneros are clearly not giving up on their target and they could test Sporting’s resolve with an improved proposal ahead of the summer transfer window.
Joao Mario is another excellent product of the youth academy at Estadio Jose Alvalade and he has so far scored 8 goals in 57 league outings for the Lions.
The central midfielder, who can also operate on either wing, has five Portugal caps to his name and stands a good chance of making the country’s Euro 2016 squad.
