Everton star Leighton Baines said he is aiming to establish himself within the England starting line-up after impressing at club level.

David Moyes’ left-back is second choice to Chelsea’s Ashley Cole, who is expected to earn his 100th cap for the Three Lions on Wednesday in a friendly with Brazil at Wembley.

However, while the 28-year-old believes centurion Cole deserves plaudits for his achievement, he is eager to stake his claim for more regular appearances for the national side.

He told FATV: “Ash is on for his 100th cap now, it’s well deserved and hopefully he’ll get that tomorrow. I’ll just keep plugging away and keep doing the best that I can for my club, if that brings chances for my country as well I’ll be happy with that.”

Baines also revealed that he is looking forward to gracing the field against the South American giants, and feels the home fans will relish a clash with the five-time World Cup winners.

He added: “It’s not often that Brazil come over, so it’s an exciting game and one that I’m sure appeals to the public as well, hopefully we can play well.”
