Leighton Baines has described potential Everton manager Roberto Martinez as a “terrific” boss.

The defender, who has been rumoured to be on new Manchester United boss David Moyes’ transfer radar, believes the Spaniard has the qualities to succeed at Goodison Park.

Baines, who is currently in Brazil with the England squad, told the Liverpool Echo: “Roberto Martinez has been linked with the job. He is a terrific manager so we will just have to wait and see.

“Thankfully we are in camp so I am keeping it at the back of my mind for now and concentrating more on England.”

Fellow Everton defender Phil Jagielka is also with the national side and he added: “Everton is a massive club and hopefully we can get a fantastic manager. I will be delighted whoever comes in.”

England’s friendly against Brazil at the Maracana on Sunday had been thrown into doubt when the newly-refurbished stadium was adjudged to be unsafe.

However, this ruling has now been overturned and the game will go ahead as scheduled.
