Ballack predicts a Bayern victory

Ex Bayern Munich star Michael Ballack has backed his old side to overcome Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday.

Bayern lost to Chelsea on penalties in last year’s final, going down after extra-time in front of their own fans at Munich’s Allianz Stadium.

This weekend’s showcase at Wembley Stadium will be the third time in four years the Bavarian giants have reached the final of UEFA’s elite club competition and Ballack, who played for Bayern with distinction between 2002 and 2006, has backed Jupp Heynckes’ men to get the job done this time.

“I have seen Bayern Munich a few times this season,” he said.

“They have made such a big effort in the Champions League and they look so strong and comfortable. After losing the final last year they have come back straight away which is unusual so I think Bayern Munich will win this year.

“All Germans are happy that we have two finalists for the first time in a long time, that makes us proud and shows us the incredible talent that German football has at this moment. We are all looking forward to the game tomorrow.

“I mean the two clubs beat all of the strong teams like Real Madrid, Juventus and Barcelona and they have beaten them by a few goals. If you see how strong they have been this season, especially Bayern Munich there is no doubt that they deserve to be in the final 100 percent and the same with Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund had a really tough group stage with Manchester City, Real Madrid so I think they deserve it to.”

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert, a Champions League winner with Dortmund as a player in 1996/97, think his old side can upset the odds and defeat Bayern on Saturday.

“I think Dortmund are well in the game, the way they play we know – they will attack,” he said.

“Everyone knows Bayern Munich are a top side but I just think Borussia Dortmund could cause an upset. I think with the years gone by it is only this year that Bayern have lived with Dortmund, the last few years Dortmund have been the team to beat. I think it will be a really close game with goals in it but I think Dortmund will sneak a win.”
