Veteran player Sergej Barbarez will not be continuing his career for another season. The 37-year-old has not received the right offer, he says.
Barbarez, who can play both as midfielder and attacker, spent the last two seasons at Bayer Leverkusen but now feels that it is time to make an end to his career.
“It’s actually enough. For some teams, or some kinds of offers, I would have made an exception but I’m not the youngest anymore. Overall, I’m very happy about my career.”
The player, born in what is now Bosnia and Herzegovina, has been playing in Germany since 1991. After stints at Hannover 96, Union Berlin, Hansa Rostock, Borussia Dortmund and Hamburg SV, he joined Leverkusen in 2006.
Barbarez is also the foreigner with the most matches played in the German Bundesliga: 325.
