Barca, Xavi set to hold talks over a new contract

Spanish giants FC Barcelona reportedly want to agree a new contract with Catalan midfield maestro Xavi, with the Spain international’s current deal set to expire in 2014, Sky Sports understands.

Xavi has spent his entire career at the Camp Nou, where he has won La Liga six times, the Supercopa de España five times, the UEFA Champions League thrice, the UEFA Super Cup twice and last but not least the FIFA Club World Cup, also twice.

In addition, the 32-year-old has won two European Championships and a World Cup while on international with La Furia Roja.

“Last Friday the club sent us its intention to renew the contract because they want Xavi to sign a new deal, given that the current one ends in 2014,” Xavi’s agent Ivan Corretja told Esport3.

“Therefore it is normal that we begin to talk about these issues because in June it would be too late.

“We have always agreed in previous talks and there have never been problems of any kind.

“For the player it is very important to know that the club remains confident in him. Therefore I do not think there is any problem.”

Xavi has tallied one goal and one assist in five league appearances in 2012-13, with Barcelona taking the spoils — and, more importantly, all three points — in each of the aforementioned five La Liga fixtures.

At the moment, the Catalan Conquerors are exactly where they want to be, top of the table and eight points clear of bitter rivals Real Madrid in the league table.

Can Real Madrid recover from a rocky start to the league campaign, or will Barcelona hold on and regain La Liga supremacy in 2012-13?

Vidic set to miss eight weeks following knee surgery

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic will be sidelined for eight weeks after undergoing a ‘meniscus operation on his right knee’, Sky Sports reports.

The Red Devils, who are already coping without the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, will likely be forced into starting Jonny Evans and Rio Ferdinand at the back for the foreseeable future.

The pair played the majority of last season together, which will surely provide Sir Alex Ferguson with some sort of comfort, but not much to be perfectly honest.

“Nemanja Vidic has had a meniscus operation on his right knee and will be out for around eight weeks,” revealed a statement on the club’s official website.

“Sir Alex Ferguson, as a precautionary measure, rested Vidic at the weekend, after he complained of tightness in his knee, however, further medical investigation revealed the underlying problem.

“The central defender was operated on this week and will be sidelined for about eight weeks.”

United are scheduled to host Andre Villas-Boas and Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford at the weekend. Should be a cracker.
