The Catalan giants Barcelona are thought to be keeping close tabs on Athletic Bilbao defender Yeray Alvarez as La Liga powerhouse looks to reinforce their defensive options during summer.

The camp Nou outfit has allowed far too many goals this season in all competitions and the very fact that Barcelona failed to keep a clean sheet in eight of their last 12 matches speaks volumes of defensive issues Luis Enrique is facing.

The Blaugrana are believed to be on the lookout for a new centre-back and Yeray Alvarez has emerged as the club’s top target and a similar type of player to the club’s legend Carles Puyol, according to AS.  The 22-year-old is said to be under a £25 million release clause in his contract with Athletic Bilbao, which should not be too big of a problem for the La Liga giants.

Barcelona are also interested in Aymeric Laporte, whose release clause of £55 million is believed to be far beyond Barcelona’s reach.

Yeray Alvarez is under contract with the Basque side until June 2022.
