Bayern´s Wolves win pleases Lahm

Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm said his side were relieved to secure a win against a ‘tough’ Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga on Friday.

Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm said his side were relieved to secure a win against a ‘tough’ Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga on Friday.

Goals from Mario Mandzukic and Arjen Robben drove Bayern to their 18th league win out of 22 games.

They have yet to drop any points since the resumption in fixtures at the start of 2013, and now hold a mammoth 18-point lead over second-placed Borussia Dortmund.

“They (Wolfsburg) were a tough opponent, but we knew in advance that they would play very aggressively here at home, and that’s exactly how it turned out to be,” Lahm said.

“At the beginning of the match we had a great opportunity with Thomas’ (Muller) header which was only just off target.

“Then we had a few problems in the first half, also with our own game building up.

“We didn’t move particularly well, didn’t bring the ball forward well enough from the back, but then we managed to score a goal and shortly after half time we had opportunities to take a 2-0 lead.

“But we missed the chance to play better counter-attacking football and that can make things very nervy up until the final whistle, there’s no doubt about it.”

Robben said their latest win will stand them in good stead ahead of Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League tie with Arsenal.

“Of course many people are speaking about the Arsenal game next week, but I think today (Friday) was maybe, I wouldn’t say more important than the game against Arsenal, but it helped for the game ahead,” the Dutchman said.

“We won again, and again without conceding a goal, so we have confidence. If we had drawn, the feeling would be a bit different, so today was very important.”
