“Retire when you are ready”. That is the message from former England captain David Beckham as he leapt to the defence of embattled skipper Wayne Rooney.

Rooney is set to become England’s most-capped outfield player when he makes his 116th appearance in Sunday’s World Cup qualifier against Slovakia.

The 30-year-old will break Beckham’s record amid calls for him to retire from international football as managers struggle to find his best position in the team.

However, Beckham used social media to offer his support for the Manchester United captain.
