David Beckham says Los Angeles Galaxy are good enough to bounce back from Sunday’s shock loss and avoid elimination from the MLS playoffs.
Galaxy were stunned 1-0 by the San Jose Earthquakes in the first leg of their MLS Western Conference semi-final.
The defending champions dominated possession for the majority of the contest at The Home Depot Center but were unable to make a breakthrough.
Earthquakes defender Victor Bernardez struck the decisive goal in the 94th minute, leaving Los Angeles with an uphill battle to stay alive in the second leg in San Jose on Wednesday.
“I think our mindset doesn’t change going into the game, whether it was 0-0 or obviously the result that we got,” Beckham said.
“We still felt that we would always have to go to San Jose and win the game.
“They were always going to come here with confidence, and I think they sat back and in the end they were going for the draw and accepting that.
“But if you get a free kick like that, there is a chance you are going to score and unfortunately they did.
“They have come here and beat us, but there is no reason why we can’t go there and beat them, but it is going to be tough.”
Galaxy captain Landon Donovan said his team were left to rue a number of missed chances up front.
“It was never a game you would think that we would lose, but it was one that flew by and we were a little unlucky,” he said.
“We probably weren’t sharp enough in the offensive third of the field, but at worst we thought we would go up there 0-0 and just have to get a goal.
“Now it looks like we have got to get two, but it is not over. We have played well twice there this year and there is no reason why we can’t win there.”
