Standard Liege has seen off Gent in the Belgian First Division playoffs with a 1-0 win on Friday, courtesy of a Mohamed Tchite goal.

Gent were ruthless in their attack at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne, collecting five yellow cards for the clash, before forward Stijn de Smet received his marching orders on the hour mark – just seven minutes before Tchite scored the winner.

The win keeps Liege top of the playoffs table. They are level on points with Genk having played an extra game.

Liege will next face Club Brugge in eight days’ time, while Gent will hope to bounce back when they take on Lokeren next Saturday.
