Belgian First Division wrap: Anderlecht pile on misery for Brugge

Anderlecht inflicted more misery on Club Brugge through a comprehensive 6-1 win at Constant Vanden Stock Stadium on Sunday.

In their third league game following the departure of coach Georges Leekens after a disastrous start to the season, Brugge were no match for the Belgian leaders who responded to their shock loss to Sporting Charleroi in the best way possible.

Massimo Bruno opened the scoring for the home side on 22 minutes before Dieumerci Mbokani (33) and a Milan Jovanovic penalty (41) put Anderlecht up 3-0 at halftime.

John van den Brom’s men did not let up in the second half either as Sacha Kljestan (54), Lucas Biglia (86) and Dennis Praet (92) all found their way onto the scoresheet.

Maxime Lestienne’s 59th-minute goal was the only highlight for Brugge, who have not won a league game since September.

In the day’s other match, Genk dispatched Mons 5-1 to keep pace with Anderlecht at the top of the table.

Mons took a surprise lead in the 16th minute through Jeremy Perbet before Jelle Vossen levelled the scores eight minutes later, before Julien Gorius (37) and Glynor Plet (41) made it 3-1 at half-time.

Plet then scored his second on 64 minutes before Vossen finished off a brace of his own in the 84th minute to complete the rout.

Genk now sit third on the Belgium Pro League table, three points behind Anderlecht.
