Benfica open talks for Armero

Europa League finalists Benfica have started negotiations to sign Napoli full-back Pablo Armero, according to O Jogo.

The Eagles are in the market for a new left-sided defender after youngster Lorenzo Melgarejo failed to live up to the expectations.

O Jogo understands that Benfica officials have made Pablo Armero their number one target and have already opened talks with Napoli.

The problem is the Colombian is co-owned by Napoli and Udinese, meaning the Eagles would have to agree a transfer fee with both Serie A clubs.

While being considered one of world’s top full-backs just a couple of years back, Armero has seen his stock drop a great deal last season.

After losing the place in the starting line-up at Udinese, the Colombian was loaned to Napoli in January, with the Azzurri exercising the option to purchase half the rights in June.

Despite the player’s recent problems, Benfica officials believe he would be a great addition to the squad at Estadio da Luz.
