Benfica re-applied pressure on Portuguese leaders FC Porto, beating Leixoes Matosinhos 2-1 in Friday’s only league game.
An own goal from Elvis put Benfica in the lead on 16 minutes and Nuno Gomes doubled the advantage seven minutes after the hour.
Rodrigo Silva got one back for the home side in the 74th minute but Benfica held on to their lead to take the three points.
Benfica now trail Porto by one point, but the leaders could bring the advantage back to four when they host third-placed Sporting Lisbon on Saturday.
