Benfica close in on the top spots in Portugal after a 2-0 defeat over city rivals Sporting on Saturday.

Spanish midfielder Juan Antonio Reyes, who joined Benfica from Atlético de Madrid this summer, opened the score after 66 minutes.

And six minutes later, it was Sidney to double the home side’s advantage.

Benfica hadn’t won a home match with Sporting in three years, and this victory allows them to move into shared third place with FC Porto.

Nacional Funchal and Sporting are first with one point more.
