Rafael Benitez has taken a swipe at Jose Mourinho by claiming that his Real Madrid successor Carlo Ancelotti must restore the club’s values.

The 54-year-old coach was named as the Spanish side’s new boss on Tuesday, taking over from Mourinho after his return to Chelsea following a trophyless 2012-13 campaign at the Santiago Bernabeu.

During Mourinho’s first spell at Stamford Bridge, he and then Liverpool manager Benitez enjoyed a famously fractious relationship that was intensified by regular meetings between the clubs.

And Napoli coach Benitez has now reignited the feud, claiming that Ancelotti has work to do in order to redeem Real’s reputation after Mourinho.

“Ancelotti is a great coach and a great person. He will somehow manage to restore the values that have always been important at Madrid,” Benitez told AS.

“I have a good relationship with Carlo following our time in England and the Champions League finals between Liverpool and Milan.

“He is always polite towards other people. He’s an educated guy, a good professional and always does his job well. He’s won a lot of titles.”
