Benitez refuses to be drawn on future

Rafael Benitez is keeping his cards close to his chest with regard to his next managerial move.

The Spaniard’s interim spell in charge of Chelsea will come to an end in the close-season, with Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho the favourite to return to the Stamford Bridge hot seat.

This means Benitez will again be available for hire before the beginning of the 2013-14 campaign and it appears likely the 53-year-old will be involved in the annual managerial merry-go-round.

However, in the aftermath of Chelsea’s 2-1 success over Benfica in the final of the UEFA Europa League on Wednesday, the ex-Liverpool, Inter and Valencia boss refused to be drawn on where he is heading.

When asked his destination for next season, Benitez insisted he was focused on enjoying the win in Amsterdam.

“Now we return to London and then we’ll see,” he said.

Upon being asked if he may return to Inter for a second spell in charge at San Siro, the Spaniard would only say: “London for now.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea midfielder Ramires said that while his former club Benfica were the better side in the UEFA Europa League final, Chelsea themselves have been on the receiving end of tough-to-take results this season.

“The way the match went, Benfica deserved to win,” he said. “But there were examples like the game against Corinthians in the Club World Cup, where we missed loads of chances and they only had one that they scored and were the champions.”
