Best delighted to end Newcastle drought

Newcastle United striker Leon Best said scoring a goal was long overdue.

But he is hopeful his wonderful finish against QPR to secure a 1-0 victory will be the catalyst for more in the remaining four months of the season.

Best had endured a four-month goal drought for Alan Pardew’s club, but the 25-year-old found his scoring touch again for the visit of Mark Hughes’ newly-inherited Rangers on Sunday.

With top scorer Demba Ba unavailable for the next month due because of the African Cup of Nations, the former Coventry City man will have ample opportunity to fill the mantle left by the Senegalese striker.

“It was due,” Best said.

“I did need a goal. I didn’t beat myself up and get myself down, I knew it was a matter of time. But it was a nice goal and hopefully it will spur me on to many more.”

“Obviously, a striker likes to score every week, but if you are not scoring, then the main thing is to help the team and do something else and bring something else.”

“But I got the goal and the team got the three points, so it was a massive thing.”
