Lyon defender Jeremy Morel was shocked by Marcelo Bielsa’s resignation as Marseille coach and believes it will be a blow to their Ligue 1 rivals.

Bielsa sensationally announced his resignation after overseeing Marseille’s 1-0 loss to Caen in their league opener on Saturday.

Morel, who left the club to join Lyon in June, said the Argentine had helped improve Ligue 1 – and his loss would be felt at the Stade Velodrome.

“Nobody expected it. He brought the rigour, the game forward, an offensive game. All of that will surely miss in Ligue 1 this year,” he said after Lyon drew 0-0 against Lorient on Sunday.

“This is obviously a blow for the start of the season because they will have to quickly get back on the right track. Still, there are people who leave and other arriving. Another page will open.”

Morel added: “This is football. After that, it is true that the timing is not well chosen. But we do not choose either.”
