Botafogo climbed to fifth in Brazil’s Serie A on Wednesday, with a brace from playmaker Elkeson firing them to a 3-1 away win over Corinthians.
Just three days after being held to a 1-1 draw at newly promoted Sport Recife, Corinthians – the new Copa Libertadores champions – were again lacklustre, this time on home soil at the Estadio do Pacaembu.
The visitors took the lead on 28 minutes through a Paulo Andre own goal.
The doubled their advantage 12 minutes after the break when Elkeson scored, and when the 22-year-old netted again in the 69th minute the three points were safely in Botafogo’s keeping.
A 90th-minute penalty from Chicao provided some consolation for Corinthians, but the loss sees them entrenched in the relegation zone with just one win from their eight matches so far.
Botafogo, meanwhile, climbed to fifth place with the victory on 15 points, four behind leaders Atletico Mineiro.
