Coritiba continued their unbeaten start to the Brazil Serie A season on Sunday, while Vitoria edged Sao Paulo.
Marquinhos Santos’ Coritiba outfit claimed their fourth win in seven games with a 1-0 victory over Atletico Paranaense.
Geraldo scored the only goal of the game in the 56th minute, keeping Coritiba two points clear atop the table.
Vitoria came from behind to beat Sao Paulo 3-2 in a thriller at the Estadio Manoel Barradas in Salvador.
Aloisio gave visitors Sao Paulo a 10th-minute lead, but goals from Dinei and Maxi Biancucchi saw the hosts lead by the half-hour.
Sao Paulo goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni, renowned for his free kicks, stepped up to curl in a fine 25-yard effort nine minutes before half-time.
Renato Caja missed a penalty for the hosts on 52 minutes but they took the lead soon after thanks to Biancucchi.
Sao Paulo’s chances of claiming a point were dealt a blow when Wellington saw red on 68 minutes, and Vitoria held on.
Elsewhere, Botafogo remain third despite a 2-1 loss to Gremio – a clash in which Clarence Seedorf netted – while Cruzeiro thrashed bottom side Nautico 3-0 thanks to a Vinicius Araujo brace.
Vasco da Gama remain in the relegation zone after a 1-0 loss to Flamengo, Santos recorded their third straight win as Neilton scored twice in their 4-1 win over Portuguesa and Diego Forlan netted a brace in Internacional’s 3-2 victory at Fluminense.
Ponte Preta and Bahia played out a 0-0 draw, Criciuma and Goias ended goalless and Atletico Mineiro overcame Corinthians 1-0.
