Vasco da Gama slipped to their fourth straight loss in the Brazil Serie A, suffering a 2-1 defeat against Internacional on Wednesday.
A brace from Diego Forlan led sixth-placed Internacional to the win in Rio de Janeiro after Jonas had given the hosts a 22nd-minute lead.
Former Lyon midfielder Juninho set up Jonas for the opener midway through the first half to put Vasco on track to end their losing run.
But Forlan levelled on 34 minutes after an Andres D’Alessandro assist and he scored what proved to be the winner on the stroke of half-time.
The loss saw Vasco stay fifth but Marco Oliveira’s side sit five points behind fourth-placed Sao Paulo, who occupy the Copa Libertadores qualifying spot.
Meanwhile, Clarence Seedorf was on the scoresheet as Botafogo did what was expected of them in a 2-0 win over struggling Figueirense.
Bruno Mendes opened the scoring after a quarter of an hour before Seedorf doubled his team’s advantage in the 33rd minute.
