RB Leipzig have confirmed Julian Nagelsmann will take over as their coach in 2019, following Bundesliga rivals Hoffenheim’s announcement he will leave them at the end of the coming season.
Nagelsmann took charge of Hoffenheim in February 2016, and has since led them to successive top-four finishes in Germany’s top-flight.
Hoffenheim tied him to a new four-year deal in 2017, but confirmed on Thursday that 2018-19 would be Nagelsmann’s last campaign at the club.
The 30-year-old had been linked with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich prior to their appointment of Niko Kovac, while Arsenal and Real Madrid were also connected with him, but it is Leipzig who have secured his signature.
Nagelsmann has penned a contract keeping him at the Red Bull Arena until 2023, although it remains to be seen who Leipzig will appoint for the upcoming campaign following Ralph Hasenhuttl’s departure.
Leipzig enjoyed a remarkable debut in the Bundesliga in 2016-17, clinching a second-placed finish, but failed to repeat that feat last term as they ended sixth, two points and three places behind Nagelsmann’s Hoffenheim, who will feature in the Champions League next season.
