Bundesliga wrap: Bayern equal points record

Bayern Munich equalled the Bundesliga record for most points in a single season after thumping Hannover 6-1 on Saturday.

The newly crowned champions took an early lead following an own goal by Lars Stindl in the 16th minute.

Franck Ribery and Claudio Pizarro then scored either side of Mario Gomez’s double before Andre Hoffman bagged a late consolation for Hannover.

The visitors were not to be outdone though, and restored their five-goal cushion through Pizarro in the closing stages.

Bayern have 81 points with four games left to play and need only one more point to break the record set by Borussia Dortmund last season.

Elsewhere, Dortmund warmed up for their monumental Champions League clash against Real Madrid with a 2-0 victory over Mainz.

The upcoming visit of Jose Mourinho’s men threatened to overshadow proceedings in Dortmund, though Marco Reus brushed aside any sign of danger with an opportunistic opener in the first minute.

Dortmund had further chances, especially in the first half, to extend their lead, before Robert Lewandowski struck three minutes from time to end the meek challenge of a Mainz outfit that were simply outclassed for long spells.

In other matches, third-placed Bayer Leverkusen maintained their grip on a Champions League place with a 5-0 win against Hoffenheim.

Sixth-placed Eintracht Franfurt moved closer towards a surprise Champions League berth after beating Schalke 1-0.

Two goals from Rafael van der Vaart in the space of six minutes guided Hamburg to a 2-1 win over Fortuna Dusseldorf.

In the late game, goals from Maximilian Arnold, Ivica Olic and Diego helped Wolfsburg to a 3-0 victory at Werder Bremen.
