Buttner reveals homesickness heartache

Manchester United defender Alex Buttner considered quitting the Premier League champions in his debut season due to homesickness.

The one-time Netherlands Under-21 international made only five league appearances for the Old Trafford outfit last term, but managed to score on his debut against Wigan, as well as in the incredible 5-5 draw at West Brom on the last day of the campaign.

With first-team opportunities limited throughout the season, Buttner revealed that only the presence of his brother and girlfriend in England prevented him from moving back to his homeland and giving up the chance to establish himself at United.

“I now know about homesickness,” he told The Sun.

“I’d think about my family and friends at home many times. How they were, what they were doing, little things like that.

“But I did not give up and I have my girlfriend Laura and brother Denny to thank for that. They were always there for me in England. I could call on them any time. I needed their warmth.

“I’m a fighter. But had I been on my own, I’d have got on a plane back to Holland a long time ago.”
