Calvano aims to fix Sydney defence

New Sydney FC signing Tiago Calvano plans to win over the club’s fans by helping fix the A-League’s leakiest defence.

The 31-year-old completed his first training session with the Sky Blues on Thursday, after making the mid-season switch from the Newcastle Jets as a replacement for the injured Pascal Bosschaart.

And he looks set to come straight into Sydney’s injury-hit defence for Saturday night’s crucial clash with fellow basement battlers Wellington Phoenix.

The Brazilian’s arrival is a timely boost for the Sky Blues, who have battled injuries and poor form from their back-four all season, conceding 33 times in just 16 games.

“I’ve come here to do my best. If you see how many goals we conceded it’s a lot,” Calvano said after his first session.

“I’ll try to help my team-mates and I’ll try to do my best to fix this.

“But I can’t do it alone. We have a good chance to improve from this point.

“I’m here to help the team and our goal is to make the finals.”

Calvano managed just seven appearances for the Jets this season but one of those was the club’s thrilling 3-2 win over Sydney in front of more than 35,000 fans at Allianz Stadium in October.

On that occasion he drew the wrath of a few Sydney players and supporters when he was stretchered off due to injury only to hop straight back up to come back onto the pitch.

In one of the funnier moments, a Sydney fan threw a water bottle in Calvano’s reaction with the defender picking it up and taking a sip before re-entering the fray.

“It was all good,” he said with a wry smile when asked about the incident on Thursday.

“I was very thirsty in this moment and they threw me a bottle.”
